How do we develop skills and attitudes which enable people to take responsibility for their own lives and the world we live in to become active global citizens?
I think some of these attitudes are developed by how the child grows up. Frankly, the ones who are more priviledged seem to be less responsible unless they are forced to take on more on their own, vs. so called 'blue-collar' kids, who have to do more chores at home and are forced to do more things on their own.
How much a teacher can impact this is questionable, but exposing them to other cultures and other countries (electronically) can give them an appreciation for how good they have it in the US. Of course, there are those in the US who are not so well off. For them, exposure to the 'good life' might be a motivator for them to succeed and look to improve their lot.
For the well-off, 'adopting' a school or class in an impoverished area (US or outside the US) would give them a perspective as to how difficult it is for some people to survive. Perhaps this would motivate them to work harder for themselves, and also to contribute to making other peoples lives better.
I agree with what bob said, that we should be exposing our students to other cultures and countries electronically so that they understand where other people come from, why they do what they do, and why we are so different. But at the same time we are trying to get them to almost step out of there box (comfort zone of the U.S. and our cultures)and almost experience fist hand by becoming an active global citizen which i feel would impact there lives and leave a lasting impression.
From a teaching standpoint I think the best we can do for our students is to keep abreast with newer technologies and sharing experiences with others, which is what I am doing this very minute! Being a part of this program is a wonderful way to stay informed. As a teacher of millennials, the best I can do for them is to better equip my skill set. In doing so, it guarantees an improved teaching model filled with but not limited to the benefits needed to assist in the formulation of their considerable abilities. They must understand how they fit into the world which means they must be introduced to it from the standpoint of the global citizen. That’s where we come in!
How do we develop skills and attitudes which enable people to take responsibility for their own lives and the world we live in to become active global citizens? • Being sure of yourself and showing that you are able to handle responsibility often is the starting point for others to learn how to live their own lives. • Understanding and thinking of what the consequences of your actions will be before taking them is one of the keys to being successful in the real world. • Put yourself in the position of the other person for a moment and think about the implications of the actions that you are about to take and you are on the path to making responsible decisions. • Remember the same rules that you learned about respecting individuals who are in front of you and apply them to your communication methods when you are on the internet. There are people from different cultures who are on the internet, so it is best to try to know your audience. As teachers, we have the ability and the duty to assist our students in becoming functioning and hopefully prolific members of our community. Our coaching, attitude and position as role models for many of these students will be carried with them throughout their lives, so it best that we get it right and help them to do the same.
Well we can develop our skills by being actively involved in our own communities. The media is a very important vehicle for voicing concerns we might have as global citizens. The movie An Inconvenient Truth comes to mind as a film that could be used to unite the world when it comes to discussing a common problem like global warming. Educating each other and then working towards a common goal is imperative for the survival of our planet. The internet can be used to bring us closer together and help us our problems.
I believe that increasing the exposure of students to other cultures and ways of life is a start in getting them to appreciate the lives of others in different parts of the world. One effective way may be to connect two classes from different parts of the world. For example, I teach middle school in New York. It would be fascinating to connect this class to a middle school class in, for example, Japan. Through the Internet and the many tools available, this can be done in ways that could never be done before. Photos, video, voices, can all be transmitted electronicaly, providing an online opportunity for information and cultural exchange. An email program where each student has their own e-pen pal would be tremendous, and students can share their experiences with members of their own class.
I think skills and attitudes are developed through the socialization process. Through relevant modeling, the agents of socialization can create positive impact on people's lives. It is true that in a technological advance world a lot more needs to be done to develop global citzens with acceptable attitudes and skills. Some children are being exposed to the right kind of training and they are being developed. Unfortunately, we have quite a large number of children who lack proper parenting. As a result, they are not priviledged to a good foundation. Consequently, they are not well prepared for the exposed world. This makes the work of the school much more difficult. I believe teachers have a role to play in this regard. Teachers can teach and train these children, equipping them with social skills that will make better global citizens. I also, agree with Bob, in saying that they should be exposed to different cultures. This makes a big difference because they will learn at an early age that some things acceptable in one country might be a deterant in another. Children can be exposed through the use of technology so that they can become more knowledgeable of other peoples cultures. This will help to eradicate negative thinking or prejudices and to some degree enhance tolerance towards other people behavior.
A person’s attitudes are mostly developed as a child; however, as teacher we also have a large impact in the attitudes of our students. As being a model for students we can effect there way of thinking. We can set a good example of how to appreciate and be accepting of things. Also we can educate our students on how society, earth and people are effected by ones actions. It is important to educate our students on emotions and how they are effected by others
I agree pretty much with the general Idea that attitudes are developed by a child as they grow but there are a few things that can help affect a childs attitude and cultural exposure. In important fot teachers to teach about the ways of life in other countries and even different parts of our own country. It is also important for a school to have a diverse group of people the high school I went to was a diverse school and I feel that because of that I have a better understanding of what other people go through then some of my friends who went to a school that was not at all diverse.
In order for people to take responsibility for their own lives and the world we live in to become active global citizens, there must be a mutual respect between each other. How do we respect eacc other? This basic minds must be built since the people are young, which means the teachers must teach the students the right thing.
US is blessed in terms of globalization. Countries that are less diversed or even unicultured have limited impact for globalization. The internet did bring huge impact on globalization, but we must know the fact that not all countries can provide enough internet access to their own people, nor some country even banned the use of internet. I don't believe that globalization has much relationship with daily school lives, but it is a gradual transition of decades.
The foudation starts at the home from early childhood developement, through out the entire education process. We learn from one another, sharing different customs, ideals and beliefs. How boring would it be if everyone was the same?

We need to teach students to be accountable for the world and what is transpiring in it. Show a few documentaries on famous people that are doing positive things in other countries to improve the world as we know it today. They will identify with these famous people and see the joy it gives when we help out our fellow man. Then get the students involved in programs that will meet government officials and be able to speak to them about their concerns for the people of their country. Dwight Eisenhower created one such program called People to People Student Ambassadors. My daughter will be travelling with them this summer to Australia to meet children her age, the native people, and government officials. Encourage some of the more responsible students to travel with this program, they will learn a whole lot.
I think the key as others have stated here and I have also stated in other discussion posts is exposure! The question asks "how do we enable skills..." I think that before someone develops skills in anything the first thing they need is a "tool" and then with time and training you develop skill with that tool or use that tool to develop a skill or related skills. When you talk about getting people to take responsibility for their lives and the world we live in then the tools we need to give the students first are that of compassion, tolerance, curiosity, empathy as well as curiosity and a desire to learn. If we give our kids that and then give them the exposure that we have talk so much about in previous discussions here then our children can develop their "skills" as global citizens and put forth their energies to become agents for positive change not only in their own communities, but in the communities of the people in thier global network.

I like the idea of adopting a school or class. I wonder how to go about that. You gave me a good idea I'm going to research.
